Good point. I actually don't like the date picker at all and would like to replace it with something that looks like an actual calender, but in the mean time yeah I see how this could help. I'll look into it.

Right now, the day of the week is only shown AFTER the user selects a date for a task and when he/she returns to the main task entry screen. Would it be possible for the day of the week for the date selected to show up on the date selection screen (perhaps at the bottom in this format: "Tuesday, August 21, 2009")?

This is useful when entering a task for "next Tuesday" and you can't remember the exact date. This way you could just screen through the dates to find the appropriate date.

Ok, I hear you guys on the fixed bar. The reason it's a moving bar right now is that I am trying to maximize the use of the screen space, especially in landscape. Having two fixed bars (one at the top and one at the bottom) takes away too much in my opinion. I don't know yet how to make to top bar move, so it's the bottom bar that does for now.

Also I am currently assuming that sort will be a rare thing to change - if my assumption proves wrong I may have to do something about it. Re sync being in the title bar - that's what google's web site actually does and I am again aping their interface (with addition of the small-print). I will introduce the "aggressive sync without error message" option and then the need to use sync for most users will hopefully go just away. And if most users wont have a need for it there wouldn't be a point to having it take space on the screen.

So what I will probably do is ship this version as is and see how people react. I will need to add some instrumentation to collect usage frequency and test my theories.

I really like Tim's idea here. A non-movable bar with a "+", and "reorder" would simplify the process without having to scroll up or down. Also I think a Sync button would do good here as well (rather than at the top by clicking the title). The circular arrow that is used in the apps would make a great symbol to use here rather than the somewhat hidden title button that causes a sync. I would put "reorder" on the right, "+" in the middle, and "sync" on the bottom right. I would simply leave the "all lists" the title at the top.

One thought I did have that would make GeeTasks look even more like Google Tasks on the website, would be to have the "menu bar" (is that what's it's called?) at the bottom of each list where the sort button is be permanently docked at the bottom of the screen (i.e. the user wouldn't have to scroll to the bottom of a list to access it since it would always be visible). That would also allow for space for a "+" button, just like in the web version of Google Tasks.

Maybe this would muddle the screen up with too much, but just a thought.

(2) Good catch. I'll fix it.
(3) Well, you're rgiht and eventaully it will be done that way. The reason I didn't do it like this now is that when a task is deleted, its sub-tasks need to be moved to the left, but right now I don't do "move". You may notice that I pop an error dialod if you try to delete a task with subtasks and that error doesn't look out of place. If I used the stadard delete process (e.g. like address book has) you would press "Edit" button then the little red "stop-sign" circle, then confirm "delete button and then the app tells you can't delete the task. That's a lot of hoops to jump through to get a simple "no", but Apple didn't leave me choice down that road. Another thing I could do is only display little red "stop-sign" circles around tasks that can be deleted, but this looks really wierd (trust me on that one) and doesn't explain why to the user, which is bad.
So in short, it'll get better but only after I figure out how "move a task".
(4) Good catch. It broke when I made the keyboard slide out automaitcally. I have fixed it, but for now you can switch portrait/lansdcape/portarait to get the text box sizing right. BTW, landscape was there from the start. :-)

The upper-righ corner is reservred for the eventual "Edit" button that will trigger the mode where you can move task by dragging and also delete tasks as described above. Also notice that I am trying to make things look similar to how google's web site looks - this lessens the learning curve. I guess you will have to scroll, unless a bunch of other peole complain as well. :-)

Re fewer taps to add task - I am still planning to do more on this front. Right now I did a simple thing that benefits both editing exisitng tasks and creating new tasks - I bring up the keyboard by default (that uncovered a bug with lack of poroper text area resizing that Tim caught). I have also removed the yellow background - it used to serve a purpose to indicate that text is editable but now that keyboard comes up by itself this is no loger needed.

My plan to simplify creating new tasks would lead to adding text right in place of "Add A New Task" text. So it will be one tap and zero screen redraws.

Some great additions to GeeTasks that add some helpful functionality! I noticed the following enhancements:

(1) less clicks required to enter tasks:

Before it was necessary to click on the writing area for the keyboard to pop up. Now I notice that it appears as soon as you enter the writing area. I really like this!

(2) sort by date

This allows the user to order tasks by the date they are due. A couple suggestions: a. I notice that when you navigate away from a list that is sorted by date and return to it, the list is still organized by date; however, the button at the bottom of the page does not specify this (it reads, "sort: none" even though it is sorted by date). Might it be possible for this button (or "slider switch"?) to still say "sort: date" even after leaving the list and returning to it? b. While I really like this sort functionality, it is still difficult to tell at a glance (since the dates are small and lighter in color) what tasks are on what dates. Would it be possible to have sub-headings for each date and have all tasks due on that date be listed under that heading? I'm thinking something similar to the screen you see in the "Byline" app when you sort articles by feed. This would make it easier to see at a glance one's tasks for the week (i.e. which days have a lot of tasks scheduled, which days are "lighter.")

(3) delete tasks

Great feature! One downside, however, as it is currently implemented is that the user must navigate to the individual task screens in order to delete a task, which could be time-consuming if the user was trying to delete multiple tasks. Would it be possible to allow the user to delete tasks by swiping them in list view and clicking "delete" similar to how the native Notes app works?

(4) landscape view

I don't remember this being in the original version of Geetasks. Looks great! One bug I noticed in portrait mode, however, is that if the user types in the "Notes" field and those notes extend beyond a half page, they are hidden behind the keyboard, rather than automatically scrolling. This doesn't happen in landscape mode.

(5) new icon

I really like it!

One last suggestion: Right now, to enter a task you have to scroll all the way to the top of a list. This could take awhile, especially if you are dealing with a long list with many tasks on it. It might be simpler to just put a "+" button docked on the top menu area next to the title of the list. That way even if a user is at the end of a long list, he/she doesn't have to scroll back to the top of the list to enter a task.

Less Clicks to add a new task, you don't need to click in the yellow editable window and the window is no longer yellow (My suggestion to make this even better: When you hit "new task" it should take you automatically into editable view, this would make it a 1 click to add a new task rather than 2)

4. "Delete" button added to tasks (Great feature)
