further, my friend (who I researched this for) will be mostly using this as a reusable list - for things like packing. she does NOT WANT TO get rid of the tasks, but she might like to hide them while grocery shopping or packing.

others may want to use for lists where you want everything to go away.

so again - features could be added on top of google features, that don't change underlying model. Such as hide/show finished tasks tasks. Only show deleted tasks ( i think google has this )

set all finished to unfinshed…

@Scott - it seems that you just need a basic hide/show completed tasks. For as many people that want their tasks to vanish when done, others want to see what they "got done today" or something. This could perhaps be implemented as a pure visual UI display of tasks, that does nothing to change their status.

Then, delete, purge or trash, could also be there, to match or best match as API allows the google task model.

I'm not saying show or hide is the best way. I happen to prefer either, depending on the situation.

Could a 4th option be instead of displaying cleared tasks as greyed out, just not displaing them? This seems like it would be comparatively since it's just a UI change and there could be a toggle to restore the current view where completed tasks are displayed.

I clear my list once a day after reviewing what I accomplished, and I have to refer back to what I've finished a few times a week.

I strongly prefer option #2, as it's no great loss if I can't always clear, but if I can't find my completed tasks, I'm in trouble

I understand. However there are technical problems in making it work - they way Google implements "clear" is that they remember completion date for each task and then for each list they mark a certain date as "watermark" - all tasks before that date considered "Cleared".

Now imagine that you completed three tasks on GeeTasks without syncing, then you completed two tasks in Google's Web site and then you sync GeeTasks. What you expect to happen is that the three tasks are cleared and the other two are not, but what will happen is that all five will be cleared. There is no way to preserve both offline functionality and "clear" functionality.

Another problem is that you might have completed 4 tasks in GeeTasks, cleared them and then completed five more tasks. I would have to be careful to replay those operations in the exact order, otherwise all of them will end up cleared - this is not something I currently do and it will be a lot more work.

So there are three options here:

Ignore the problem above, and deal with irate people who are missing their "cleared" tasks

Make clear only work when you're online so you clearly see what is it that you are clearing.

Make "clear" on GeeTasks move tasks to separate "Past accomplishments" list. The problem here is that it will put all tasks from all lists into a single bucket - some people like to keep they accomplished tasks per list.

I'm leaning towards the second option.

Agreed -
Hiding (not deleting) completed tasks is a very fundamental feature. There should be a big button to do this, or an option for it to be automatic.

This is the first missing feature new users will find in the lite version. Google's "Clear Completed Tasks" is a must-have. GeeTasks can hide completed tasks locally after queuing the request with Google if it's a sync timing issue.

Here's my GeeTasks first impression:
1. Create task
2. Mark task as done
3. ?? Why is it still on my to-do list?

If you're like me and have a pre-existing google task list that is heavily used, the lack of a way to auto-hide completed tasks is painfully obvious in the first 10 seconds of trying to use the app.

Love it otherwise, very nice & look forward to updates.

SC

Having a list called "Completed" works really well for me. especially now that we can sort alphabetically as well as by date it is reasonably easy to find things.

The 1.11 version of GeeTasks about to be released will let you manually move tasks to a different list, so this should give you some breathing room until permanent solution is in place.

I've just purchased GeeTasks and straight away this was the only thing I found lacking. Please prioritize this enhancement as I too need to be able to review what I've completed. Until you do so, I'll never "purge" from your app. This means that your app can't be used standalone as I'll need to use the web app's clear completed option.
Thanks

The confirmation dialog actually asks if you want to delete tasks. I hope not too many people are confused there.

But yeah, that might be a good idea - move them to a hidden list and then "clear" that list. I'll look into that.

Anything is better than trashing. It doesn't matter whether you move them to an internal Completed Taks list or hide them until the next sync, as long as they don't go to the trash.

Thanks for replying, and I hope you'll have the time to fix that, because I think it's an important issue, and it can be confusing for people who expect Purge to hide completed tasks.

Yes I did consider it. The problem is that with the Google's APIs as they are I can not do what you ask. If I tried it would hide all completed tasks at the moment sync is done, not at the moment you pressed the "clear" button. Does it make sense?

I could have missed something in the undocumented APIs but I don't have much time to dig deeper right now.

The "Clear Completed Tasks" command in the Google Gadget makes them invisible, and we can always see them by using "View completed tasks", if we ever need to remember when the task was completed.

On the other hand, "Purge" in GeeTasks moves the completed tasks to the trash, where we might have all kinds of wrong/blank/misspelled entries that we don't want to see or remember anymore.
And I'm not even sure if the trash gets emptied automatically after a specific number of days or not, but in any case, the trash is the trash, and my completed tasks deserve better than that, especially if I want to remember the day I quit smoking, or the day I bought GeeTasks :)

I think the behaviour of "Clear Completed Tasks" makes more sense, and I hope you'll consider it.
