Rather than buy the pro version of geetasks, why not upgrade your apps account to full account status - http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/static.py?page=guide.cs&guide=29934&topic=29936
By doing this you get a lot of extra google features like Picasa accessible to you and you can use the regular cheaper version of geetasks. Eventually all apps accounts will be transitioned to full account status anyway. The only advantage I can see for the pro version is the fact that it uses encryption to transmit data. However, this is something that I feel should be implemented into the regular version anyway - why should non pro users be subjected to a lower standard of data security?
The encryption is identical in all versions of the app, I need to change the app description.
The two GeeTasks versions have always been advertised and will keep working as follows:
1. Std - regular gmail accounts only.
2. Pro - both gmail and Google Apps accounts.
Now due to Google's changes with "full account" GeeTasks temporarily worked with transitioned Google Apps account. That was a bug and it will be fixed in today's update to GeeTasks.
In addition the Pro version now has an extra feature "view tasks from all lists", and going forward new major features will be free to Pro version and paid upgrades to Std version. Bug fixes and minor improvements will be free to both.
Wow. That's pretty uncool. Since my apps account worked in the "Lite" version and I knew it was a transitioned "full account" I went ahead and paid for the standard release of geetasks. Seems to be working well and overall have been happy with the app. Hardly sounds like a bug to me - more like a feature. I don't understand the point of all of these different versions? Why not just have a trial "lite" version so people can test the app and a full version that does everything?
Your upcoming release that breaks my ability to sync awaits my one star review.
How can explain this to you? You see, if I don't make enough money I'll just go back to my cushy corporate job that pays many times(!) better and has zero risk. And then there wouldn't be any kind of GeeTasks. To make the money I can charge everyone $6 or I can charge less to people who have less, so that more of them actually buy. Regular gmail users, on average, do seem to be worse off than Google Apps users, so I'm charging them half the price.
FWIW, the iTunes sales pitch is super-crisp about that:
GeeTasks does not work with custom domains ("Google Apps" for business), please purchase GeeTasksPro instead.
So if I'm understanding you, Denis, one can upgrade to GeeTasks Pro now, even if they only have a regular gmail account? Before now, the Pro version was only for users who had Google Apps, correct?
If this is the case, I'll *happily* upgrade to Pro, even though I've already paid for the regular version! To me, it's worth so much more than what you charge: I couldn't function without my Geetasks… my scattered, ADHD brain misses just moves too fast and I forget too many things if I don't write them down! I used to drown in post-it notes or details would simply escape me. Every other to-do program I tried (and they were legion) was so complicated and overdone, that I didn't end up using them! But Geetasks covered the things I needed while being simple to use and easy on the eyes!! Yep - there are a few things folks have mentioned in other threads that would be "nice to haves," but for me, those are really just sauce. The necessities are pretty much already there. So, yeah, I'm happy to pay for a good product (and for such great responsiveness to customer suggestions and complaints - a rare thing among app developers!!).
Besides, with regard to buying the Pro version - I've been mulling over the idea of getting Google Apps for my law practice (I'm a solo transactional attorney who works with small businesses & NPOs in Seattle - I don't need some huge software suite!), so having the Pro version already in place could be mighty convenient!
Thanks for all you do!!!
Hi Molly. Pro could always do what standard version can, so Pro supports both Google Apps and Gmail-type accounts.
As of now, Pro also has "All tasks from all lists in a single pseudo-list" feature, which other versions of GeeTasks lack. Moreover, going forward, Pro will have all the new features added for free, while the regular version will only have them as paid add-ons. I have attempted to summarize the difference in the table at the top of the page here: http://www.geetasks.com/
So, you can go ahead and purchase Pro right now if you want it. Or you can wait a couple of months - I was going to add upgrade option from within standard version, so you would be able get the Pro at the difference in price.
I'm in Seattle too, it's great to meet someone who lives close by. Shoot me an email, maybe we could chat about how you use GeeTasks.
TheJesse is a complete douche. I'd like to see him contribute more than the occasional fart. Write your one-star, Jesse, and choke on it. Maybe you should take on a few more hours at Taco Bell, move out of mom's basement, and get a life.
NOTICE: I am not in any way associated to GeeTasks, other than I depend on it daily.
Hey, guys, I appreciate the support, and it would be even better if we could all keep it civil. Please? :)
Some people don't like paying for what they use, and I try to stay away from them.
Personally, I prefer to pay for my apps, because it feels right to reward the good work I got to enjoy, and to promote future improvements. Given the high volumes of iPhone apps, even small contributions add up enough to make a difference for the developer, and I just like making the right kind of difference, especially when it doesn't take much away from me.
I also prefer to deal with people who are like me, and in that I am truly lucky to have y'all as my customers. :)
Hi Denis,
thanks for the app. It's vital to me and I was happy to purchase the good product.
Still, I would somewhat agree with theJesse.
I've been using regular geetasks for months and was very happy with it.
So when I found the pro version, I bought it without much thinking any any doubt.
But now I have to admit that differences between the two versions don't cost $6 bucks.
$6 is not much at all for the excellent tool, but it's somewhat unfair to pay it for almost no additional functionality when you have almost identical app already.
(Not sure why I need the "all tasks" function and what's the difference between Google Apps and Gmail-type accounts)
Possibly, a bit better marketing move would be to have a free demo version that people can use for couple months to realize how useful it is and then sell the full version.
Sorry, man, just wanted to share with you.
Anyway, thanks for the great app!
Dude, I love it.
Hi Sergiy.
Google Apps is a special account type from Google, it's like gmail but for businesses. Hence why I charge more for it - presumably people use those things for business and can justify the extra cost, while personal users may not be able to.
I completely agree with you that paying $6 to add "All Tasks" super-list is unfair, and that is not how it was meant to be and I am taking steps to make it fair.
Those who require Google Apps (and you are not one of them, or you would know for sure) should only pay amount close to the difference in price to upgrade from GeeTasks to GeeTasksPro, not the whole price. In fact, this piece is already in place - if a person purchases GeeTasks but later discovers they need Google Apps they will be offered "GeeTasksPro" upgrade for the difference in price (minus one cent:-). Alas, the upgrade dialog is not yet shown to people who don't need Google Apps, so you couldn't use it.
If a person doesn't need Google Apps but wants other perks from "Pro", they should only pay a portion of the $3 price difference, and certainly not $6 that you paid. And there should be a free trial for everything, so you can skip paying if you didn't like it enough to justify the price. And I am almost done with changes to make all of this possible. There is also already a "Lite" version which I plan to expand a bit.
I wish I could make it up to you for the double purchase you had no need for. Alas, I can't undo any of the payments - they are in the Apple's hands. How about you send me an email, and I will give you some free promo codes for GeeTasks? You couldn't use them yourself, but you may gift it to someone else…
(all numbers in this post are based on current prices, those numbers should get adjusted proportionally if the prices go up or down).
I also want to add that paying customers should not feel the need to apologize for any criticism that is politely worded, including criticism of prices. People who show their willingness to pay for my work are the people whose opinion I value a lot.
